OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Unity
in Vision is a democratic organisation and we constantly listen to our
members. This means that this mission statement is likely to change over
time as we meet new challenges.
Unity in Vision’s mission has
become more focused with time and experience. The purpose of this brief
note is to familiarise visitors with Unity in Vision's mission, which
although implicit in our Constitution, might not be immediately obvious.
A one sentence description of what Unity in Vision does is:
"We unite people from diverse cultures to work co-operatively on social projects that benefit the entire community". However, all this activity has a purpose beyond just “good works”.
We
bring people together from diverse cultural backgrounds so that they
might see beyond the negative stereotypes and institutionalised social
prejudice to meet their fellow human beings face to face. This we do in pursuit of a
fair, equitable and integrated civil community that also values
diversity.
We encourage the celebration of cultural difference
as a positive social and national benefit. We look forward to the day
when a woman in hijab or a sari or anyone of a non-white complexion
ceases to signal "foreigner" in the minds of many people.
We
yearn for the day when all residents of Bournemouth, Christchurch, Dorset & Poole will feel wanted,
valued and appreciated, in what for many is the land of their birth,
irrespective of skin colour or differences of culture.
We also
have a second string to our bow. We positively support and encourage
ethnic minority individuals to participate fully in society on their
own terms. Especially so in the case of some people who would not
otherwise feel confident to interact socially outside their own culture
without a supportive environment. Because of our extensive social and
cross-cultural contacts these are people who would not likely be
reached by any other means.
We also aim to represent, and give
representation to, all cultures willing to participate and who support
our Constitutional aims. It is thus crucial for us to include members
from the dominant local culture. Unity in Vision thus actively seeks
membership by representatives of any culture represented in
Bournemouth, Christchurch, Dorset and Poole. In other words, although at the moment
most of our members are "BME (Black and Minority Ethnic)" we are not a "BME" group and we do not want to be a "BME" group. We like to think that Unity in Vision is an exemplar of what one day will be thought of as ‘normal’ British society. |
